woman fire at SpringHill week 1.5 |
If you grew up in church, you probably remember singing the corny, super cheesy song 'This Little Light of Mine' when you were young. The song is supposed to talk about the faith you have inside of you being something that everyone can see. Addison Road recently rehashed this age-old song to bring about something, perhaps, a little less cheesy. You can decide if they were successful, it's most certainly not my call.
Whenever this song plays, though, I remember a silent reflection I took part in on SLU's nature retreat a year and a half ago. We (the retreatants) had just belted out the cheesy version of the song and were then led into a time of silence and meditation by the retreat leaders. The question was posed--what does your light look like? (Wait! I though the light thing was a metaphor!) Is it strong and mighty? Or weak and in danger of being blown out? Is it big and bright for people miles away to see? Or is your light small enough to be shared with just one person at a time? (I don't know...) Is it a candle? Is it a lightbulb? Is it a spark? Is it a house fire? Is it the sparkle of the sun? (A lightbulb...no...a spark...no...no...I don't know...)
My light is a campfire.
It is big enough that many people can feel its warmth
but small enough that you're not afraid.
It takes poking and prodding...something I often need help with.
Natural things can put it out but it will take quite a lot.
Still, if it is not attended to regularly, it may just go out on its own.
The metaphor can continue as long as I'd like it to.
My light is a campfire.
What's yours?
